Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Instrumentation and Control Engineer to work in our Instrumentation and Controls Department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Engineering Research Office Building in Idaho Falls, Idaho with every other Friday off.
The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining control systems for various applications, with particular focus on embedded systems and machine learning integration. This role requires a deep understanding of electrical and electronic systems, programming, and the application of machine learning techniques to enhance system performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop instrumentation and control systems for various DOE, NASA, and DoD projects, ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards.
- Integrate machine learning algorithms into embedded systems to optimize performance and reliability.
- Develop and maintain embedded software for control systems using languages such as C++, Python, Lab View, and Rust.
- Conduct simulations and testing to validate system functionality and performance.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including nuclear engineers, to understand safety and system requirements.
- Perform technical reviews of electrical system documentation and provide recommendations for improvements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to control systems and embedded software.
- Document design methodology, system architecture, and test results for future reference and replication.
- Level 1:
Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited institution. - Level 2:
Bachelor’s and (2) years of relative experience or Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited institution. - Experience with PCB layout, SMD/THT soldering, JTAG debugging, and embedded systems programming.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, C#, System Verilog, Lab View, Python, MATLAB, and Rust.
- Familiarity with software tools like Cadence Virtuoso, Model Sim, Quartus, KiCad, LTSpice, and Fusion 360.
- Knowledge of machine learning applications in embedded systems.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Experience with high‑performance power electronics and magnetics, and advanced hardware for machine learning.
- Background in designing and evaluating machine learning accelerator architectures for inference on FPGA.
- Understanding of analog and digital circuit design, and system on chip design.
The employee frequently stands, walks, sits, stoops, kneels, bends, and works in an office and field environment, which may include construction sites. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. - The pay range for this position is:
Level 1 ($65,064 – $133,416) / Level 2 ($77,628 – $159,228). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials. - TDP:
