Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Nuclear Science and Technology group is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a technical career as a Regulatory Development and Support Engineer
.

Responsibilities Include:

The nuclear reactor regulatory development and licensing support engineer will lead medium to large projects in a dispersed work team environment and perform tasks associated with current light water reactor and advanced reactor designs in both developing and existing regulatory frameworks, including those established in conjunction with either the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or the Department of Energy (DOE).

This individual will direct and/or contribute to projects or significant tasks that may involve multidisciplinary activities in direct support of reactor owner-operators, reactor technology developers, the NRC, or DOE programs addressing reactor deployment and sustainability. The work will frequently tackle complex or longstanding regulatory challenges, requiring the candidate to be able to develop broad-based and collaborative approaches to provide solutions which are highly innovative.

The person in this position will be expected to frequently interact with industry partners, including the commercial sector, other parts of DOE’s national laboratory complex, the NRC, and DOE to regularly confirm that the approaches developed meet customer needs. Some travel and public speaking will be required.

Candidate will lead significant regulatory framework development projects or tasks and is encouraged to build teams across organizations, and will participate in professional activities and/or external collaborations. Opportunities will exist for the development of professional publications. The individual is expected to proactively identify, promote, and develop appropriate new technical capabilities and develop and implement plans for new and significant project opportunities.

This includes highlighting the department capabilities to potential new customers; foster relationships with the NRC and existing customers; serving in positions of visibility in professional organizations, conferences, and various non-government organizations.

BS degree in a scientific or engineering field plus 8-12 years of relevant experience,

OR MS degree plus 6-8 years similar experience

OR PhD plus 4-6 years similar experience

  • Regulatory experience with various types of reactors, including commercial nuclear power plant operations, advanced light water and non-light water reactor technologies, and test or research reactor facilities

Level 4 or Level 5

  • Depending on the level awarded to the selected candidate, review and approval by the designated review committee may be required.
  • Able to work in a culturally diverse environment
Preferred Requirements:
  • Required skills include a demonstrated ability to work independently and write technical reports with minimal supervision, handle subcontract work scopes and subcontractor work products, and regularly report on project status and earned value.
