Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking an intern to support our SPL Operation group. This internship provides hands-on experience supporting precision manufacturing and nuclear operations workflows. Interns will assist with in-cell CNC machining, robotics-assisted material handling, and automated transfer processes. You will help troubleshoot equipment, support the startup of new operational processes, and develop foundational nuclear operations skills under the guidance of experienced technicians and engineers.

This role exposes interns to real-world applications of machining, engineering design, manufacturing automation, and safe operations within specialized nuclear environments.

This team works a 4x10 schedule onsite at our Materials and Fuels Complex campus. Start date and duration of internship vary based on project and student availability. You may be eligible for course credit for this internship.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled full-time in an Undergraduate Degree Program at an ABET accredited college/university studying Machining, Nuclear Operations, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or closely related
  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT)
  • Current Resume or CV
  • Unofficial Transcripts (include current and completed degree programs)
  • Current class schedule and number of credits

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience programming or operating CNC machines, or coursework in machining.
  • Engineering or manufacturing coursework or hands-on experience.
  • Familiarity with robotics, industrial automation, or mechanical systems.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and hands-on capability.

Compensation:

  • Undergraduate Internships ($26.94/hour - $32.41/hour)
  • Masters Internships ($35.34/hour - $37.73/hour)
  • Multi-Level: Internships are typically multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, type on a keyboard, reach with hands and arms, and operate job-related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required.
