Role Summary

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for implementing and overseeing the radiation protection program for the radiopharmaceutical drug manufacturing facility. This role ensures the safe use, handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including NRC or Agreement State requirements and internal quality and safety standards. The RSO will serve as the subject matter expert for radiation safety across manufacturing, quality, engineering, maintenance, and logistics functions, providing guidance, training, and oversight to minimize occupational and environmental radiation exposure.

Job Responsibilities and Duties

Serve as the designated RSO for the site, maintaining day-to-day oversight of the facility’s radiation protection program in accordance with NRC, corporate, and license conditions.

Implement and maintain radiation safety policies, procedures, and work instructions. Provide feedback to corporate personnel for continuous improvement to procedures.

Ensure ALARA principles are embedded into all radiological operations and continuously evaluated for effectiveness.

Maintain compliance with the site radioactive materials license, including adherence to authorized isotopes, possession limits, use locations, and approved procedures.

Prepare site-specific license amendments, renewals, and required regulatory reports and submit to Corporate for review and submission.

Act as the primary site contact during NRC inspections and corporate audits; coordinate responses to findings.

Administer the site personnel dosimetry program, including badge issuance, tracking, review, investigation, and record retention.

Establish and maintain bioassay, air monitoring, and contamination monitoring programs as required.

Investigate radiation exposure anomalies, contamination events, or procedural deviations and implement corrective and preventative actions.

Deliver initial and recurring radiation safety training for site personnel.

Ensure only trained and authorized individuals are permitted to work with radioactive materials or access-controlled areas.

Maintain training records in accordance with regulatory and system requirements.

Provide on-site radiation safety support for manufacturing operations, including hot-cell use, dispensing, synthesis, packaging, and quality control activities.

Review and approve radiological work permits, non-routine operations, and process changes impacting radiation safety.

Support facility design, equipment qualification, and process changes to ensure appropriate shielding, monitoring, and contamination controls.

Oversee the site radioactive waste management program, including segregation, decay-in-storage, packaging, labeling, and disposal.

Ensure compliance with environmental release limits for airborne and liquid effluents.

Maintain records related to waste generation, storage, disposal, and environmental monitoring.

Lead investigations of radiological incidents, spills, contamination events, or near misses at the site.

Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventative actions.

Ensure timely notification and reporting to regulatory authorities as required.

Job Requirements | Skills | Education

Bachelor’s degree in physics, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or other closely related fields preferred

Experience working with radioactive materials

NRC or state Authorized User (non-medical or cyclotron operator) Status designation

Laboratory Safety Knowledge

Ability to work a variety of schedules, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Must possess excellent interpersonal communication and leadership skills
