Responsibilities
  • Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents.
  • Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
  • Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to determine what medication errors occur, when, where, and why, and how they can be prevented.
  • Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, charts, and reports, and submit these as required.
  • Maintain a friendly, productive working relationship with other members of the nursing department, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
  • Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate and cooperate with facility surveys (inspections) by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees affecting the medication pass to improve performance and accuracy.
  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications commonly used in the facility and ordered by the attending physician or Medical Director.
  • Verify that medications brought in by newly admitted residents are examined and identified by the attending physician or the facility pharmacy/pharmacist.
  • Follow facility policies regarding the destroying of medications and assist in carrying out these rules under the direction of the facility pharmacist or Director of Nursing Services, including documentation requirements.
  • Follow labeling policies and ensure all administered medications are properly labeled.
  • Follow charting procedures for medications and assist in documenting and removing medications discontinued by the attending physician.
  • Follow procedures governing drug receipt errors, including notifying the delivery source and the Director of Nursing Services; document the drug receipt error with a written report signed by an observer/witness and you.
  • Follow procedures for holding medications for residents who are transferred or when medications are discontinued by the attending physician.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed, and document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered with reasons for refusal.
  • Promptly notify the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services of any medication errors or reactions by residents.
  • Verify resident identity before administering medication treatment.
  • Accurately measure, record, and report residents’ vital signs.
  • Follow procedures allowing residents to self-administer their medications when applicable.
  • Be familiar with the meaning and usage of common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms used by the facility, pharmacists, and physicians.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs to stay current and maintain certification.
  • Agree not to disclose residents’ protected health information and report suspected violations to the Administrator.
  • Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access the facility's information system.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures and as instructed by supervisors; cooperate with inter-departmental and other facility personnel to maintain nursing services for residents.
Qualifications
  • Education and/or

    Experience:

    Must possess, as a minimum, a high school education or its equivalent.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must be a licensed Medication Aide having completed a state-approved training program and any necessary examination(s) in accordance with state laws.
  • Physical Demands: May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; extended desk/computer work; regular sitting, standing, walking, speaking; frequent use of office equipment; may assist in resident evacuation during emergencies. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
  • Work Environment: Noise level usually low to moderate; reasonable accommodations available.
