Department overview

The Department of Counselor Education recently celebrated 30 years as a Program and earned CACREP re-accreditation for all three programs through 2033. We have long-standing relationships with alumni, site supervisors, and other community partners, many of whom are part of our active advisory board council. The Department offers a Master of Arts in Counseling with a cognate in School Counseling and a cognate in Addiction Counseling.

In addition, the Department offers a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision delivered through an innovative Apprentice Model. Both the Master’s and Doctoral programs are CACREP accredited. The Department is newly housed in the School of Allied Health Science in the College of Health Sciences.

Our mission in the Department of Counselor Education is to prepare ethical professionals who are reflective practitioners and scholars. Graduates from our programs are qualified to practice in a variety of educational and behavioral health settings. We strive for an inclusive learning community, encouraging professional growth and innovation through a balance of challenge and support.

When graduating students are asked what they like most about the program, they note appreciation for the cohort model (we accept approximately 24 students a year, and those students follow a three-year program track together), an on-site practicum experience with community counselors serving as live supervisors, and close relationships with committed and supportive faculty. As a smaller, in-person program with a competitive application process, new faculty can expect highly committed students and the opportunity to develop personalized mentoring relationships with students.
