Duties
  • The staff SLP is required to provide speech-language pathology services in outpatient, acute/inpatient, swing bed, and as directed
  • The staff SLP is required to see all types and ages of patients including pediatric and geriatric
  • The SLP will work with the therapy office manager to schedule outpatients and inpatients
  • When inpatient SLP orders are received, the SLP will evaluate the patient as quickly as possible, generally within 48 hours. For swing bed and home patients the SLP will perform the initial evaluation within 72 hours whenever possible
  • The SLP will review the SLP referral, patients' medical records, and patients' goals to determine appropriate SLP treatment plan
  • The SLP may confer with physician, mid-level providers and other practitioners to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integrate occupational therapy treatment with other aspects of patient's health care
  • Provide written evaluation and treatment plan based on evaluation of patient data
  • Provide a written POC to be signed by the provider
  • Updates POC as needed
  • Evaluate effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatment to achieve maximum benefit
  • Address cognitive aspects of communication (e.g. attention, memory, problem solving, executive functions)
  • Address speech (i.e., phonation, articulation, fluency, resonance, and voice including aeromechanical components of respiration)
  • Address language (i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic/social aspects of communication) including comprehension and expression in oral, written, graphic, and manual modalities; language processing, preliteracy and language-based literacy skills, phonological awareness
  • Address swallowing or other upper aerodigestive functions such as infant feeding and aeromechanical events (evaluation of esophageal function, not limited to use of MBSS, is for the purpose of referral to medical professionals)
  • Address sensory awareness related to communication, swallowing, or other upper aerodigestive functions
  • Administers therapeutic activities and strategies to improve and maintain function
  • Instructs, motivates, and assists patient to perform various activities
  • Supervises and communicates with therapy aides regarding patient activities, exercises, and assigned tasks
  • Records treatment, response, and progress in patient's EMR
  • Enters billing for services provided in the EMR
  • Instruct patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home
  • Provide patient and family education
  • Occasionally provide community-focused educational seminars, discussions, or classes
  • Attend meetings as requested by Administration or other hospital staff
Requirements
  • Current Idaho Speech-Language Pathologist license
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or equivalent CPR certification
  • Membership in ASHA is preferred by not required unless directed by AHSA
