Maintenance Technician – Landscape Bring Boise’s most beautiful public spaces to life!

In this hands‑on role, you’ll help maintain and enhance parks, right‑of‑way sites, and signature garden areas through a variety of plant and landscape maintenance activities. Responsibilities include caring for turf, plants, irrigation systems, ponds, and equipment, while closely monitoring plant health—especially within the Rose and Platt Gardens. Job Responsibilities
  • Performs routine or repetitive tasks with specific instructions and set procedures. Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher‑level staff.
  • Plants, prunes, weeds, applies mulch, debris and trash removal, applies chemicals and ensures the health and well‑being of plants and gardens.
  • Maintains rose garden, including plant health, pruning and diagnosing plant problems.
  • Coordinates with maintenance workers to complete tasks as assigned.
  • Monitors and repairs assigned irrigation systems. Maintains an efficient water level at assigned garden pools and ensures structural integrity.
  • Processes work orders in a timely manner. Re‑designs shrub beds.
  • Serves on call for tree related emergencies and snow removal multiple times a year.
  • Provides limited oversight to seasonal staff, volunteers and Sheriff Inmate Labor Detail (SILD) crews as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.
Required Knowledge, Experience, and Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience working in parks maintenance including plant care such as pruning, planting, transplanting and diagnosing plant and soil problems.
Knowledge of:
  • Installing, troubleshooting and repairing irrigation systems, mixing and applying chemicals using a variety of hand‑and power‑operated equipment.
  • Standard safety practices related to relevant tools and equipment.
  • Horticulture, plant health, maintenance and soils.
  • Integrated pest management principles for treating disease, insects and weeds.
  • Right‑of‑way safety.
  • Chemical application and related safety procedures.
  • Irrigation systems and maintenance.
  • Computer usage including related software.
Ability to:
  • Operate and provide training in the safe use of vehicles, heavy equipment, power and hand tools
  • Read blueprints, schematic diagrams and technical manuals
  • Schedule multiple projects concurrently
  • Safely utilize related protective gear and safety equipment
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, and Training
  • Associate's degree in horticulture, biology
    or related field
    and two years of experience performing park maintenance in a lead role.
  • Master Gardener Certification.
  • Idaho Landscape Certified Horticulture Technician.
  • Ability to set up safe ROW work zones in compliance with the manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and work zone safety training.
Licensing and Other Requirements
  • Valid state‑issued driver’s license.
  • State of Idaho Professional Applicator license in Ornamental Herbicide, Law and Safety or Ornamental Insecticide category within six months of employment.
