PART-TIME HOUSE PARENT/SHELTER WORKER role at The Coeur d'Alene Tribe

Overview

POSITION TITLE: Part-Time House Parent/Shelter Worker

DEPARTMENT: Social Services - ICW

LOCATION: Youth Shelter – Plummer Idaho

REPORTS TO: Shelter Lead or designee

SALARY RANGE: Grant funded; $16 p/hr – No benefits

DURATION: Funding dependent and on shelter occupancy; may work up to 24 hours per week

Summary Of Duties And Responsibilities

Each Shelter Worker will be responsible for all the duties associated with caring for the youth placed in the shelter by Tribal Police, Tribal Social Workers, or Social Services Director. Children must have adult supervision during their temporary placement in the youth shelter.

The shelter is open seven days per week, including on holidays when occupied, and closed when no children are in the care of the Tribe. Needed shift coverages are currently on weekends (Saturday & Sunday) between 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

  • Care for youth up to age 17.
  • Receive referrals from law enforcement on a 24/7 basis and respond accordingly.
  • Obtain initial paperwork from referring agency and process paperwork appropriately.
  • Make arrangements for medical treatment when necessary for incoming clients.
  • Provide transportation for clients to medical or other appointments.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of the facility.
  • Preparation of meals and laundry duties.
  • Screen visitations according to policies and case manager’s plan.
  • Chart client activities daily.
  • Maintain program log.
  • Plan and monitor recreational activities. Weather permitting, attempt to take children outside.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality concerning Program, Staff and Client information.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have strong customer service skills and the ability to defuse tense situations while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Must be culturally sensitive to a diverse customer population and able to interact tactfully and positively with Tribal members, all levels of tribal staff, and management.
  • Must pass an extensive background check before and every 5th consecutive year of employment after that according to the following:
    • 25 CFR 12 Part 32
    • 25 CFR 63 Part 17
    • Public Law 101-647
    Must not have any offenses related to abuse, Domestic Violence, neglect, or endangerment.
  • Must support the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s vision, mission, and core values per Coeur d’Alene Tribal Resolution 015(2020).
  • Must comply with all other Health policies established by the Tribe or department.
  • Must have an initial pre-employment physical exam and TB screening/test annually after that and comply with all other Tribal Health policies, including the annual flu shot.
  • No offenses related to dishonesty or theft.
  • High school diploma, GED, or mandatory enrollment in such program with GED obtainable within six (6) months of hire, unless an elder.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and be insurable on the Tribe's Auto insurance policy at the time of application and during employment.
  • Encouraging sobriety from alcohol and drugs for the past three years, with no offenses related to controlled substances of alcohol or drugs within the past ten years.
  • Possess CPR certification, First Aid, Fire Safety, QPR Suicidal Prevention Training, Parenting Classes, How To Deal With Difficult Behaviors, and Food Handlers Permit or be willing to obtain within six (6) weeks of hire.
  • Experience working with youth, preferably in a residential setting.
  • Possess cultural knowledge and sensitivity to Native American values.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and meal preparations according to menus.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must possess good communication and crisis intervention skills.
  • Must be accountable, reliable, dependable, and trustworthy.
