Position SummaryThe Asphalt Superintendent is a working leader responsible for overseeing daily paving operations and performing hands‑on work alongside the crew. This position requires a skilled operator with experience running a paver, roller, skid loader, and other asphalt‑related equipment. The Superintendent leads by example ensuring safety, quality, and production goals are met while maintaining open communication with the crew, project managers, and inspectors.
This role is ideal for a union laborer or operator ready to take the next step in leadership while staying active in the field.

- Operate equipment such as a paver, roller, skid loader, and tack distributor as needed.
- Direct union operators and laborers in day‑to‑day tasks, ensuring quality workmanship and productivity.
- Plan daily work activities and set crew expectations to meet schedule goals.
- Foster a positive, team‑oriented environment and mentor crew members on safe, efficient work practices.
- Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Foremen, and Trucking/Plant personnel for smooth operations.
- Promote a strong safety culture, lead daily toolbox talks and ensure all PPE and safety procedures are followed.
- Conduct site inspections and address potential hazards immediately.
- Ensure compliance with company, OSHA, and DOT standards.
- Work collaboratively with the Safety Director on incident reporting or corrective actions.
- Ensure proper paving temperatures, mat thickness, compaction, and smoothness according to IDOT/MoDOT specifications.
- Monitor yield, tonnage, and laydown rates to optimize production.
- Inspect completed work for proper joint matching, grade, and overall finish.
- Communicate material or mix issues promptly with the plant and Project Manager.
- Verify delivery tickets and document production for pay items and billing.
- Review project plans and specifications prior to start‑up to fully understand scope and sequence.
- Schedule equipment, trucking, and manpower to meet daily and long‑term production targets.
- Coordinate site logistics, traffic control, and subcontractor activities.
- Track equipment needs and report maintenance issues to the Shop or Equipment Manager.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, including crew counts, equipment usage, weather, and production.
- Track pay items, yields, and materials to ensure proper billing and accountability.
- Assist the Project Manager with schedule updates, change order documentation, and quantity verification.
- Minimum 5 years of asphalt paving experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory or foreman role.
- Proven ability to operate a paver, roller, and skid loader safely and efficiently.
- Union card (Laborers' or Operators' local) required.
- Strong understanding of IDOT/MoDOT asphalt paving specifications and inspection procedures.
- Experience leading union crews and coordinating with inspectors, project managers, and subcontractors.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, grades, and paving layouts.
- Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
