Position: Long Term Substitute - Special Education Teacher (Transition Program)
Location: Barrington

Overview

The Barrington Transition Program is a vocational program involving Barrington 220 students who qualify for special education services, have been deemed appropriate to continue their education in transition activities by their IEP team, and are between ages 18-22. Portions of this program operate in conjunction with the Division of Rehabilitation Services. We recognize that students are most effective as employees and citizens when they are independent, productive, and confident, and provide opportunities to achieve these goals through vocational training, daily living skills practice, community-based instruction, and planning for all aspects of their lives.

Qualifications
  • 1. Current and valid Illinois Teaching Certificate (PEL)
  • 2. LBS I/LBS II Endorsement
  • 3. Exceptional ability to collaborate with students, parents, and other professionals
  • 4. Current knowledge of special education laws, rules and regulations and District policies and procedures. The ability to apply these to help ensure District compliance.
Job Summary

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Student Services, the Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives, and functions as IEP Case Manager for assigned students.

Reports to: Building Principal/Director of Student Services

Supervises: N/A

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the services required to meet those goals.
  • Adheres to procedural requirements, including due process timelines.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP; serves as primary contact for the parent.
  • Schedules team meetings.
  • Participates in special education evaluations and reevaluations for all students on their caseload.
  • Establishes and maintains classroom discipline and a structured environment aligned with district policies to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect.
  • Provides instructional direction to paraprofessional support staff: assigns activities, provides guidance and instructional oversight.
  • Collaborates with educational professionals regarding the needs of students; provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding adaptations, modifications, equipment, and behavior plans.
  • Provides professional expertise and assistance to individuals, other district staff and the community.
  • Attends training sessions, conferences, seminars, and meetings; keeps abreast of changing developments and instructional technologies.
