The Process Engineer, Energy leverages technical expertise to drive operational and project goals, with a strong emphasis on energy optimization at Phillips 66 refineries. This position is chiefly responsible for identifying, implementing, and fine-tuning strategies that enhance refinery energy efficiency. Collaborating with various teams, the Process Engineer develops initiatives aimed at optimizing energy use, improving operational results, prioritizing safety and sustainability, and achieving cost savings and profitability.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Improving cost competitiveness and energy usage in process
  • Work with refinery leadership to communicate performance and highlight opportunities for energy optimization
  • Optimizing and troubleshooting process operations
  • Understanding key economic measures and capturing unrealized value
  • Evaluating key performance data including yields and reliability metrics
  • Communicating and correcting process quality problems
  • Developing and driving implementation of process improvements
  • Participating in Process Safety Management (PSM) activities such as MOC, PHA's and LOPA
  • Maintaining key process safety information including P&IDs, PFDs, Heat and Material Balances
  • Technical support for major turnarounds and unit shutdown / startups on shift schedule
  • Providing process support and specifications for maintenance projects

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • 1 or more years of experience in refining, petrochemical or related industry
  • 1 or more years of experience working as a Process Engineer
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Travel up to 5% of the time
    • Occasional on-call duties
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years of experience in refining
  • 3 or more years of experience working as a Process Engineer

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada.

Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feed stocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.

The base pay range for this role is $111,600 - $160,700depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
