Overview
The Charge Nurse, Emergency Department, 36
Hr/Night, is responsible for facilitating and assisting with all levels of nursing care within one nursing unit during a shift. The Charge Nurse may assume all or partial staff nurse responsibilities and is accountable to the Nursing Coordinator for the unit, helping with day-to-day problem solving, shift-to-shift communication, and serving as a link between staff nurses and the Nursing Coordinator.
- Supervise nursing personnel; assist in interviewing applicants for posted positions and make recommendations to the Coordinator.
- Support organizational goals, provide input into staff evaluations, monitor performance, and document performance issues.
- Contribute to staffing pattern development and monitor day-to-day nursing resource utilization; coordinate staff meetings under the direction of the Coordinator.
- Monitor resources and identify systems problems impacting client care; communicate risk situations to the Coordinator; participate in trend analysis for the operational budget.
- Assist with materials management and ensure availability of supplies; provide direction during emergency situations as delegated.
- Actively participate in delivering or facilitating client care; contribute to standards of care, policies, procedures, and protocols; coordinate and participate in patient care delivery on the unit.
- Apply the nursing process (assess, plan, implement, evaluate); participate in quality assurance activities and in the development and achievement of departmental goals.
- Participate in multidisciplinary patient care conferences and discharge planning; identify and solve problems intrashift and intershift; keep Coordinators/Hospital Supervisors informed.
- Serve as an educator for other health care professionals and clients; assist in in-service programs and clinical orientation; provide education to patients and families; act as a resource to other departments in the area of specialty.
- Participate in professional activities; support departmental philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures; engage in meetings, projects, and committees; support research programs as designated; promote interdepartmental communications; uphold professional standards.
- Three (3) years of Registered Nurse experience, one year in a clinical specialty.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing;
High school diploma or GED. - Licenses/Certifications:
Registered Nurse License (in the state where care is provided);
Basic Life Support (BLS);
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS);
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire OR Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course within 6 months of hire; NIH Stroke Scale Certificate within 1 month of hire. - Additional requirements:
Excellent critical thinking skills; ability to assume authority of the unit. - Preferred qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in nursing; CEN and/or TNCC preferred; demonstrated ability to recognize and interpret cardiac dysrhythmias; ability to function within the nursing process and professional/personnel standards; strong communication and interpersonal skills.
