Clinical Mental Health Counselor – Governors State University, College & Counseling Center.

Description
Governors State University is seeking a Clinical Mental Health Counselor to provide comprehensive clinical services and outreach/educational programming to support the mental health and well‑being of its diverse student population. Using a brief / time‑limited therapy model, the Counselor will conduct diagnostic assessments, develop and implement treatment plans, and provide individual, couples, and group therapy for students presenting with anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, academic and interpersonal difficulties, and other mental‑health needs.

The Counselor will also offer crisis counseling and intervention for students experiencing acute mental‑health or substance‑related emergencies, facilitating referrals to campus and community resources as appropriate. As a member of the Counseling and Wellness Center, the Counselor collaborates with campus partners to promote student wellness, offers clinical consultation to faculty and staff, and provides training to graduate students in psychology, counseling, or related fields.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct clinical services to students using a brief / time‑limited therapy model, including diagnostic assessment, intake, development and implementation of treatment plans, individual therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, termination, and follow‑up.
  • Deliver crisis counseling and intervention services for students experiencing acute mental‑health and/or substance‑related emergencies, including conducting risk assessments, implementing appropriate interventions, and facilitating referrals to campus and community resources.
  • Collaborate with campus departments and partners to support coordinated crisis stabilization efforts and ensure continuity of care.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant to the campus community, faculty, staff, and stakeholders on issues related to student mental‑health and well‑being.

    • Deliver ongoing in‑service training and mental‑health educational programs to the university community.
    • Maintain relationships with community mental‑health providers and referral sources.
    • Provide supervision and training for peer mentors and coordinate outreach initiatives.
    • Engage in professional development and membership in relevant state and national organizations.
    • Participate on university committees and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling and Wellness.
  • 10% Administrative Responsibilities
    • Complete and maintain clinical documentation (intake forms, informed consent, client rights, releases of information, case notes) in compliance with Illinois regulations, FERPA, and APA standards.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $58,260 - $60,384. This is a non‑unionized, full‑time on‑campus position. Days and hours:
Monday‑Friday, 7½‑hour workday with an unpaid lunch. Occasional outreach events outside regular business hours, including weekends, may be required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in social or behavioral science, or a related health specialty area from an accredited institution.
  • Current Illinois licensure as a Licensed Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSSW).
  • Three (3) years of progressively more responsible full‑time experience in a social work or clinical setting (medical/clinical or social‑service agency).
