This position is a full-time position created and governed by the NIA Policies and Rules and Regulations assigned to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Department and under the direct supervision of the Education Department Operations Executive and/or Supervisor. The Educational Interpreter assists in facilitating communication between students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and others using sign language and/or oral interpreting.
The Sign Language Interpreter works 177 days per year for 7 hours per day and earns $29.75 - $53.79 per hour, depending on experience.
The Educational Interpreter is a member of an educational team that has a federal obligation to educate a student with special needs. As a related service provider, the Educational Interpreter has legal responsibilities to support a child's education, providing the student access to the general curriculum. xrlwcon These legal responsibilities define a very different scope of practice for the Educational Interpreter than for the adult community interpreter.
