American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit conservation corps partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), seeks a Biological Program Support Member to contribute to biological surveys and conservation projects at Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) staff.

Position Dates

Start Date: March 2026 (flexible; March start date available).

Estimated End Date: September 2026.

Commitment: Minimum of 28 weeks (~1120 hours).

Location

Stationed at Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge – Brussels, Illinois (two rivers confluence). Refuge covers 9,225 acres of floodplain habitat, offering seasonal wetlands, forests, grasslands, side channels, and river islands. The headquarter office is in Brussels. Position Overview

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. This role supports the FWS biology program at Two Rivers NWR, ensuring high‑quality habitat management for diverse wildlife species.

Responsibilities

Wildlife, Vegetation, and Data Management (70%)

  • Participate in waterbird and vegetation surveys using various research methods.
  • Assist in studies of how vegetation communities respond to management activities.
  • Use field equipment (cameras, GPS, binoculars, spotting scopes, tablets) to capture data.
  • Identify and collect independent data.
  • Log samples and data.
  • Compile and summarize survey data.
  • Enter data into databases and reporting systems.
  • Manage biological samples, ensuring proper documentation, storage, and delivery.
  • Enter and analyze data using statistical methods and database software.
  • Prepare segments of recurring reports such as monthly activity summaries.
  • Enter and retrieve data from GIS and other information systems.

Public Use and Environmental Education (25%)

  • Provide biological information for public materials.
  • Participate in educational programs for individuals, local organizations, and schools.
  • Offer basic conservation resources and FWS information to the public.
