Correctional Officer Trainee – Centralia Correctional Center
This position provides eight weeks of formal pre‑service security training at the Illinois Corrections Training Academy, followed by on‑the‑job training under the immediate supervision of qualified correctional staff. Candidates are physically fit to meet the screening requirements for entry into the Academy. Successful completion of Pre‑service Security Training and the firearms course results in a formal ceremony, certificate, badge, oath of office, and assignment to a facility.
EssentialFunctions
- Receive eight weeks of pre‑service security training, including firearms qualification.
- Undergo one week orientation at the assigned facility.
- Receive on‑the‑job training and perform tasks under immediate supervision, including running lines, yard work, dining room duties, housing unit management, perimeter patrol, armory duties, counting, shakedowns, and movement of inmates.
- Assist other correctional employees on a rotating weekly basis.
- Travel statewide using a state‑issued vehicle to complete assignments.
- Perform other duties reasonably within the scope of the enumerated functions.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of resident behavior problems.
- Complete a pre‑service security training course during the trainee period.
- Complete firearms training and demonstrate proper use of firearms.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel statewide.
- Be eligible to acquire and possess a firearm and maintain a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card.
- Utilize digital technology and tools to support departmental efficiency.
- Pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check and a drug screen.
- Abide by all required vaccine and medical standards.
Work Hours:
7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.; shift and days off will vary.
