All other City employees are required to live within a 90‑mile radius of Independence, Kansas within six months of employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Performs laboratory tests as required.
- Performs minor repairs and standard maintenance to plant and substation equipment.
- Maintains grounds around plant and lagoons.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Ability to perform minor repairs to plant equipment.
- Ability to execute appointed tasks in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Ability to read gauges and recording devices.
- Ability to keep routine records.
- Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools.
- Ability to listen to, follow and communicate oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work well with a small team.
- A current Kansas driver’s license.
- Must become certified as a Kansas Class I Wastewater Treatment Operator within eighteen months of employment.
- Compliance with state‑mandated continuing education requirements.
- Must be available to work nights, in shifts, overtime, and weekends.
- Completion of high school or GED.
- Two years’ experience applying mechanical knowledge or the principles of chemistry preferred.
- Intense physical effort is required. Individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time.
Wastewater Treatment Plant – Status:
Open. The City of Independence will accept applications at Kansas Works, 317 N. Penn Avenue, Independence, KS 67301, or online at the City’s website, for a full‑time Wastewater Plant Operator Trainee for work at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

: $2,500.00 for non‑certified plant operators and $5,000 for certified operators.
Salary:
The starting salary for this position is $16.99 per hour plus benefits.
