Ks.gov, or in person at Kansas Works, 317 N. Penn, Independence, KS 67301, for the position of Patrol Captain for work in the Police Department.
Basic Function — Under direction, directs and supervises the law enforcement and crime prevention activities and policies of the city.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Supervises and participates in the patrol, criminal investigation, dispatch, and record keeping activities of the department
- Plans, allocates, and monitors personnel and resources
- May act for the Chief in the absence or at the direction of either
- Oversees department’s training and continuing education programs
- Assists with recruitment and selection of new officers
- Monitors performance of officers and recommends disciplinary actions
- Manages parts, equipment, and supplies for patrol activities
- Performs policing activities of subordinate officers
- Maintains departmental records
- Assists in preparation of departmental budget
- Represents department in the press and at public functions
- Performs additional duties as assigned
- Knowledge of the principles of modern police administration and of accepted practices and procedures of police science
- Knowledge of proper and effective methods in deploying police officers in accordance with actual and anticipated emergencies
- Knowledge of criminal law with particular emphasis on the investigation, apprehension, arrest, and prosecution of law violators
- Ability to analyze and interpret police problems and criminal evidence
- Ability to instruct and advise subordinates in all pertinent phases of law enforcement and police procedures
- Ability to supervise a municipal police force
- Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations
- Completion of high school or GED required
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred
- Six years of law enforcement experience, including three years in a supervisory or lead capacity, is required
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is preferred
- A current Kansas driver’s license
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must have completed Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center
- Must complete any advanced training as assigned, and maintain KLETC certification
- Must be available to work nights, overtime, in shifts, and weekends
Primarily moderate to occasionally intense physical effort is required. Individual must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time.
Working ConditionsWork involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions.
Salary Range and BonusSalary Range – The salary for this position is $24.90 to $36.11 per hour, depending on your qualifications, plus benefits.
3-Year Commitment Bonus Available — $5,000 for certified officers
