To ensure compliance with federal, state and local requirements. Advocate for the educational success of all students. Assist with the overall general efficiency of the school district.

Provide educational leadership and expertise concerning special education programs.

Provide direction to schools in areas of program effectiveness and planning; monitor compliance of federal, state and district regulations.

Exhibit an awareness for confidentiality and accuracy in implementing services within the school district so that each special education student may have the opportunity to derive the greatest academic and personal benefit from the evaluation and learning experiences.

Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.

Demonstrate the ability to use computers for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.

Present a positive image of the school to parents, and convey to them the school’s genuine concern with the education, growth and development of each child.

Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the central administration, parents and representatives of resource agencies with the community.

Use effective communication and presentation skills when addressing students, staff, parents and the community.

Represent the school and district at community, state and professional meetings.

Attend required staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees.

React positively to directives.

Maintain a professional office environment.

Answer correspondence promptly.

Maintain and improve professional competence.

Demonstrate punctuality and dependability.

Carry out assignments in a timely manner without undue monitoring and checking.

Take the necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Adhere to the Owen County Board of Education Policies and Procedures.

Collaborate with school personnel to ensure successful delivery of special education and preschool services.

Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.

Represent the Board, when requested, in mediation, administrative hearings and court proceedings relating to students in need of or receiving special services.

Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports as required by law and regulation.

Ensure compliance of special education personnel with regard to responsibilities consistent with research on learning and child growth and development, and strategies in special education instruction.

Recommend staffing needs.

Assist in arranging and monitoring transportation of all eligible students.

Coordinate the purchasing of instructional materials and equipment following district procedures and guidelines.

Collect and analyze data, particularly State Assessments, regarding the achievement of special needs students and other pertinent information affecting the design and implementation of services and programs, using the information to recommend new programs and modifications in existing programs.

Keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education.

Provide suggestions in establishing new programs/units and developing improved understanding of existing programs.
