Job Summary and Qualifications

The Armed Police Officer (APO) reports to the Security Director or designee. The APO protects the facility’s assets, people and programs. Responsibilities include maintaining a secure environment, providing respectful assistance to patients, visitors and staff, enforcing policies, carrying out patrols, responding to emergencies, and reporting incidents.

  • Supports the hospital’s safety and security management program to create a safe physical environment.
  • Assists all hospital patients, visitors and employees with dignity and respect, acknowledging their needs promptly.
  • Demonstrates compliance with laws, regulations, HCA’s Code of Conduct, and reports suspected violations.
  • Conducts preventive patrols in the area in and around the Emergency Department.
  • Aids staff with enforcement of Temporary Detention Orders (TDO) or Emergency Custody Orders (ECO) when appropriate.
  • Provides emergency communication between the hospital and the police department during crises.
  • Responds to various emergency codes to provide security services where necessary.
  • Assists in restraining patients under the supervision of a physician or nurse.
  • Prepares written reports, including daily activity, incident, and other required reports; reports unusual incidents and crimes on appropriate forms by shift end.
Qualifications
  • Police academy graduate.
  • Currently employed, sworn, and commissioned police officer with the local Police Department.
  • Proof of ongoing law enforcement training as regulated by the Law Enforcement Agency.
  • Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) certification or training preferred.
  • Only department‑approved firearms, batons, and pepper spray may be carried as duty weapons on HCA property by officers certified to carry those weapons.
  • Off‑duty officers may carry duty‑service firearms only if they have completed qualifying training with a department‑approved program; unauthorized weapons are prohibited.
  • Authorized duty holsters must have a minimum Level II retention capability.
  • Only hollow‑point ammunition is approved; reloads, remanufactured, altered or modified ammunition is not permitted.
