An orthopedic job involves diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal injuries and conditions through both surgical and non-surgical methods. Key responsibilities include performing surgeries like joint replacements or fracture repairs, developing and implementing treatment plans, prescribing medication, and collaborating with other medical professionals. Orthopedic professionals also provide pre- and post-operative care, manage pain, and oversee patient rehabilitation.
Core responsibilities
Diagnosis and treatment:  Evaluate patients through physical exams, imaging, and lab tests to diagnose conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.
Surgical procedures:  Perform a variety of surgeries, including joint replacements, fracture repairs, and procedures to fix torn ligaments and tendons.
Non-surgical treatment:  Implement non-surgical treatments such as casting, splinting, joint injections, and prescribing medication for pain and recovery.
Patient care and rehabilitation:  Develop comprehensive treatment plans, which often include arranging physical therapy and rehabilitation programs.
Documentation and record-keeping:  Maintain detailed and accurate patient records of histories, diagnoses, and treatments.

Collaboration:

Work with other medical professionals like physical therapists, nurses, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Emergency care:  Respond to trauma and emergency orthopedic cases, often requiring on-call availability and flexibility for shift work.
Required qualifications and skills

Education:

A medical degree (MD or DO) followed by a residency and potentially a fellowship in orthopedic surgery.
Licensing:  A valid medical license and board certification are required.
Technical skills:  Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity are crucial for surgical procedures.
