Responsibilities
Patient assessment: Conduct initial evaluations, conduct interviews, review medical and family history, and use psychological tests to gather information.
Diagnosis: Diagnose mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders using established criteria such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).
Treatment planning: Develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to individual patients. This can include a combination of medication, psychotherapy (like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and other medical interventions.
Medication management: Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications, monitoring their effectiveness and adjusting as needed.
Patient and family support: Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families about their condition and treatment.
Collaboration:
Consult with other medical professionals, such as therapists, neurologists, and pharmacists, to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
Record keeping: Thoroughly document patient diagnoses, symptoms, medications, and treatment progress.
Advocacy: Advocate for patients, especially with organizations like schools, to help them get the support they need.
Key qualifications
Education:
A Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) degree and a psychiatric residency are required.
Licensing and certification: Hold a valid medical license and often a board certification in psychiatry.
Skills:
Excellent listening and communication skills, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to use deductive and inductive reasoning to diagnose and treat conditions.
