Role Overview

The Staff Accountant has three primary job responsibilities within the Department of Labor. The role facilitates travel expense approvals and out-of-state travel requests, including inquiries and workflows. The role reviews bi-weekly payroll submissions for accuracy and feedback with frequent communication between DOL management and Comptroller's office. Additionally, the role enters accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions on a daily basis. The Staff Accountant ensures that all documentation is saved in the correct format and location.

The role generally assists with mail pickup as needed to maintain internal control integrity. The position is 100% office based at the Indiana Government Center South in Indianapolis, office hours are 8AM-4:30PM Monday through Friday.

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $39,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day In The Life
  • Reconcile accounts and subsidiary ledgers with general ledger.
  • Post transactions to cost summary journals.
  • Prepare a variety of accounting and financial reports from the accounts maintained.
  • Prepare, correct, and adjust entries prior to closing accounts.
  • Analyze procurement activity and disbursal of funds and assist in the preparation of program area budget requests.
  • Review accounts to ensure availability of funds before encumbrances and advises supervisor if account balance is not in agreement with State Auditor’s Office.
  • Ensure all contractual obligations are fulfilled prior to payment to vendors for services or purchases.
  • Secure specifications and requisitions for purchases of equipment, furniture, and supplies.
  • Monitor verification and editing of ledger input to computerized accounting system for the specific program area.
  • Recommend changes in accounting policies and methods and assist in developing accounting procedures.
