High School Sports Reporter II
Indy Star, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking a reporter to cover high school sports in Indiana. The reporter will work with two other preps reporters to deliver compelling coverage across the state. This role requires high‑value storytelling, including enterprise stories, features, investigative pieces, and the ability to break news, develop strong sourcing, and leverage all media forms such as social media, mobile, podcast, desktop, video, television and print.
The newsroom has won three Pulitzer Prizes, including in 2021 for national reporting. The high school sports reporter will report to assistant sports editor Kyle Neddenriep.
Key Responsibilities- Primarily focus on a variety of high school sports
- Assist in coverage of major events, such as the Indy 500 and NCAA
- Be a curious, assertive and self‑starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency
- Harness social media and messaging platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok and/or Reddit, as a news gathering tool.
- Optimize stories for target audience groups using SEO and metrics information.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years of professional journalism experience.
- An entrepreneurial approach to growing audience and a dedicated following.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to take photos and record video/audio in the field.
- Solid news judgment that’s guided by experience with audience metrics.
- Strong sense of journalism ethics and grounding in basics of media law.
- Commitment to reporting with fairness, compassion and sensitivity.
- Command of AP style and dedication to accuracy.
