THE ORGANIZATION
Established in 1849, the Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA) is the largest physician organization in the state, representing more than 10,000 physicians, residents, and medical students across every specialty and practice setting. ISMA advances the art and science of medicine, promotes public health, and advocates for high standards of medical practice. The Association engages in state and federal advocacy, provides educational offerings, regulatory guidance, practice management resources, and leadership development opportunities for physicians throughout their careers.
ISMA oversees related entities—including its political action committee and charitable foundation—which extend the organization’s impact through policy engagement and public health initiatives. Headquartered in Indianapolis, ISMA operates with an annual budget of approximately $5M and a professional staff of 25 under a Board of Trustees representing geographic districts statewide.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Vice President (EVP) serves as the chief staff officer of ISMA and provides strategic leadership, operational direction, and organizational stewardship in support of ISMA’s mission and priorities. In collaboration with elected physician leaders, the EVP acts as a primary spokesperson for the Association and helps develop, advance, and implement policies, programs, and initiatives that strengthen the physician community and enhance member value.
The EVP plans, organizes, and oversees ISMA’s programs and services to achieve objectives, execute financial and operational plans, and respond to member needs. This includes driving innovation in member engagement, professional development, and non-dues revenue opportunities while upholding advocacy and public health commitments.
The role requires maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with state and federal policymakers, healthcare organizations, and key stakeholders across Indiana. The EVP manages the Association’s staff, budget, and operational resources, ensuring accountability, transparency, and prudent stewardship of member investments. Through effective leadership, the EVP fosters a culture of excellence, teamwork, and service, positioning ISMA as a respected voice for physicians and patients in Indiana.
