Kroc Institute Visiting Research Fellowship

The Kroc Institute’s Visiting Research Fellows Program brings outstanding scholars focused on peace research to the University of Notre Dame for a semester or full academic year.

Research Fellows

Fellowships are offered to scholars with substantial research experience who will connect their research to ongoing Kroc Institute research initiatives. For the 2026-27 academic year, we invite research proposals that focus on one or more of the following themes:

  • Intersection of Gender, Race, Class and Peace building – interdisciplinary approaches and qualitative, participatory, or feminist methodologies.
  • International Mediation – preventive diplomacy and national dialogue as strategies for preventing and ending high intensity conflict.
  • Peace Accords Matrix (PAM) – design and implementation of peace accords, with emphasis on inclusive peace processes, civil society, transitional justice, and country contexts negotiating or implementing a peace accord.
  • Sustainability, Climate Change, and Peace – innovative, interdisciplinary approaches exploring the relationship between peace and sustainability, environmental peace building, and issues such as illegal mining, deforestation, food security, and livelihoods.

Preference will be given to applicants whose research has direct relevance to policy and/or practice. Applicants should present a clear plan, significance, and how the Kroc Institute is an ideal place for the fellowship.

Applicants must indicate whether they seek a fellowship for a single semester or the full academic year.

Application Process

A Kroc Institute faculty committee will review applications and recommend to the Institute Director. Selection criteria include academic excellence, relevance to the Institute, and participation in intellectual life. Selected applicants will be notified in March 2026.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed a doctoral or equivalent degree. If currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program, the degree must be completed before the fellowship begins. If previously a Kroc Visiting Research Fellow, wait seven years before reapplying.

Application Instructions

A complete application includes:

  • A cover letter (≤2 pages) indicating grant semester preference and field of application.
  • A research project proposal (≤10 pages double‑spaced) with sources, methodology, timetable, expected products, and bibliography.
  • An up‑to‑date Curriculum Vitae.
  • Two confidential letters of recommendation (to be submitted via Interfolio).
Other Information

Fellowships begin at the start of the University of Notre Dame’s semester (August or January) and can run for one semester or an academic year. Fellows receive a stipend of $30,000 per semester, furnished Institute apartments at no cost, library access, internet access, and document retrieval services.
