Visiting Assistant Professor for Ceramics
The Department of Art & Design at the University of Indianapolis invites applications for a full‑time Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics. This position is within the liberal arts Studio Art program, which also offers BS degrees in Graphic Design, Illustration, Pre‑Art Therapy, and Arts Education.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will teach undergraduate ceramics courses in the NASAD‑accredited Bachelor of Science program. Responsibilities include planning and delivering instruction in hand‑building, wheel throwing for functional and sculptural works, building and maintaining kilns and pottery equipment, understanding clay and glaze chemistry, knowledge of stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware, and familiarity with oxidation and reduction firing. The role also involves managing and operating the Ceramics studio, overseeing open studio hours, and coordinating the physical management of the Dee Schaad Student Gallery in the same building.
Service duties include student advising, portfolio reviews, studio management, department events, exhibitions, and related activities. Ideal candidates collaborate well with faculty across disciplines and value a multidisciplinary approach.
- MFA in Ceramics required.
- Professional experience in ceramics and university‑level teaching preferred.
- Prior studio management experience is an advantage.
- Preferred: previous teaching experience in higher education.
