Meter Severance Technician role at Citizens Energy Group
OverviewWe have a career opportunity for a Meter Severance Technician to join our team! The successful candidate will be responsible for making in person visits to the premises of customers who are delinquent on their gas, water, or wastewater accounts or are suspected of unauthorized consumption of utility services. To minimize customer dissatisfaction and IURC complaints, the incumbent must exercise strong customer service skills, make contact with and determine if customers have paid on their delinquent accounts, and evaluate the conditions of each disconnect order to determine if additional intervention or assistance is needed.
The incumbent will leave appropriate notification or disconnect utility services for non‑payment. Revenue Assurance Field Technicians will also work on theft related orders and assist the Utility Service Theft Investigator as needed for safety. In this high‑risk job, the incumbent must work safely, remain aware of surroundings, exercise good judgment around animals and customers’ pets, operate utility vehicles safely, and manage company tools while reading gas and water meters accurately in all weather conditions.

Minimum hourly wage: $42,800 (Grade
4)
- Organize daily activities and route work to optimize time efficiency.
- Review customer accounts and make critical decisions to extend or discontinue service, balancing revenue protection with customer considerations.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Read water and gas meters accurately and safely operate the utility vehicle.
- Relock or remove meters where unauthorized reconnection has occurred and investigate potential theft on other services.
- Direct and train other personnel as needed.
- Pursue continuous learning, attend meetings and training events.
- Report irregularities and abnormal conditions found while in the field.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Indiana Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Pass the Operator Qualification Conditions test for the Gas Division.
- Pass the Meter Pro test for meter reading at a minimum of 95 %.
- Ability to independently organize and manage daily workload.
- Pass and participate in the random Drug & Alcohol program in accordance with PHMSA regulations.
- Maintain a safe driving record with no serious traffic violations, accidents, suspensions/revocations, or DUI/DWI convictions within the last three years.
Preferably, two years or more experience in Distribution or Gas/Water Operations, especially in customer contact positions. Experience with account analysis, order/transaction processing, and technology used in the field. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
