Role Overview:
As a Senior Traffic Engineer within the Traffic Mobility Office at the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), you will play a pivotal role in shaping the state’s roadway network. This position focuses on operational efficiency, capacity planning, mobility, and accessibility—particularly on the Interstate System and high-volume arterial routes.
This senior-level position requires a highly skilled traffic engineer who can lead complex technical analyses, strategic planning, and project coordination. You’ll be the go-to subject matter expert on traffic mobility, collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to enhance Indiana’s transportation infrastructure. You will utilize your proficiency in traffic analysis software including Synchro, PTV Vissim, PTV Vistro, HCS, Sidra, and others.

This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office Traffic Engineering Department, Indianapolis Area.
A Day in the Life:The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Scoping and coordination of limited access right-of-way protection activities. This includes scoping work on protective buying projects, coordination and review of permits, and other associated tasks.
- Complex traffic analysis including basic capacity analysis, speed data analysis, and microsimulation, in order to recommend effective solutions to identified needs on the state network.
- Scoping, coordination, and technical review of complex traffic mobility projects, including freeway and interchange projects, and arterial and intersection projects.
- Collaboration with other departments of the agency on topics including design, standards and policy, and others.
- Provide technical support and serve as a subject matter expert for statewide traffic engineering team.
- Involvement with research program to drive development of research-based solutions to traffic engineering needs.
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
- Registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana required.
- Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering is preferred but not required) from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.
- Experience in engineering (civil engineering is preferred), transportation research or related area.
- Be willing to travel with an appropriate accommodation.
