Position Summary:

The Indiana University School of Medicine, in partnership with the Regenstrief Institute Clem McDonald Center for Biomedical Informatics, seeks an experienced physician leader to serve as the Program Director for its ACGME‑accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program. The Director will oversee all aspects of the fellowship, ensure compliance with ACGME requirements, foster excellence in education, and advance clinical informatics through innovative training and research.

The Program Director will hold an open‑rank clinical faculty appointment in the IU School of Medicine and a secondary appointment as Associate Director for Education with the Regenstrief Center for Biomedical Informatics. Candidates can have any clinical specialty and must be an existing Diplomat in Clinical Informatics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Leadership & Administration:
    Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the CI fellowship curriculum; ensure compliance with ACGME accreditation standards and institutional policies; lead recruitment, selection, and onboarding of CI fellows; manage program budget and resources in collaboration with programmatic and departmental leadership.
  • Educational Oversight:
    Develop and deliver didactic and experiential learning opportunities in clinical informatics; supervise fellows’ scholarly activities and clinical rotations; provide mentorship and career guidance; evaluate fellows’ performance and provide regular feedback.
  • Faculty Development &

    Collaboration:

    Recruit and develop a faculty team with expertise in informatics, clinical care, and research in coordination with the Regenstrief Center for Biomedical Informatics and IU department chair; foster interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and institutions.
  • Quality Improvement & Innovation:
    Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement in education and clinical informatics practice; lead initiatives that integrate informatics into clinical workflows to improve patient care.
  • Research & Scholarship:
    Support fellows in conducting informatics‑related research and publishing findings; maintain an active scholarly presence in the field of clinical informatics.
Resources and Support
  • Start‑up funds from the Regenstrief Institute to facilitate CI program growth.
  • Dedicated administrative effort for the CI Program from staff located at the Regenstrief Institute.
  • Access to ample office space at the Regenstrief Institute with clinical space through the department and engaged health systems.
  • Collaborative relationships with CI Diplomats and faculty associated with the Regenstrief Center for Biomedical Informatics.
  • An existing, robust curriculum adopted by health systems and the statewide health information exchange.
  • Multiple research centers and the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center for collaborative opportunities.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree with active board certification in a primary specialty.
  • Diplomat in Clinical Informatics.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in clinical informatics practice or education.
  • Active clinical practice, regardless of specialty.
  • Prior experience in graduate medical education preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Indiana.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ACGME‑accredited fellowship programs.
  • Track record of scholarly activity in informatics.
  • Familiarity with clinical decision support systems, health information exchange, and clinical AI applications.

Individuals who would qualify as an Associate or Full Professor at the IU School of Medicine are preferred, but Assistant Professor rank candidates are invited to apply. Individuals with existing extramural funding for research or training programs are strongly encouraged. This position will most likely be non‑tenured, though tenure eligibility can be considered for exceptional candidates. All candidates must be clinically active and eligible to practice in Indiana.
