The Lilly Health Physicist - Radiation Safety Professional will provide technical expertise for both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation safety and will help build, support and maintain radiation safety programs and licenses that contribute to Lilly’s overall mission across both research and manufacturing environments.
The role will be expected to contribute to further technical development and at some point own programs associated with laser safety and control of other non-ionizing radiation hazards (e.g. ultraviolet light, magnetic fields). Implementation will include networking and engaging across the broader Lilly Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) organization to facilitate program understanding and implementation.
The role will serve as a member of the Corporate radiation safety team and collaborate with scientists, operations, HSE and support personnel across both Lilly research and manufacturing sites to help implement programs, manage risk and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and Lilly internal standards. With ongoing growth in research and development of radio imaging and radio therapeutic solutions, the position will serve as part of the health physics team to manage support for both manufacturing and research sites discovering, developing and distributing radiopharmaceuticals and providing technical excellence across the organization in support of medicines to reach patients in need.
Key Responsibilities for this role include:- Manage non-ionizing radiation safety programs, including providing program development and coordinating internal and external expertise and implementation for laser safety, ultraviolet radiation, magnetic fields, etc.
- Support various aspects of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Broad Scope (non-medical) licensed activities in Indianapolis to ensure the safe and compliant use of material from receipt through disposal, including radioactive material inventory and tracking, various surveys, radiation safety training, receiving and checking in radioactive materials, and other associated responsibilities.
- Provide support for health physics instrumentation broadly across applications supporting research and manufacturing uses of radioactive material, including various handheld instruments used to monitor for exposure rates and contamination, analytical instrumentation including liquid scintillation and gamma spectroscopy, effluent monitoring, and other related health physics equipment.
- Provide periodic auditing support for radiation programs and compliance at third party organizations partnering with or providing services to Lilly.
- Conduct and assist in managing shipping and receiving operations involving radioactive material, including sample shipments to domestic and international locations.
- Provide various radiation safety training (ionizing, laser and other non-ionizing) to employees of internal organizations engaged in radioactive material use or potentially exposed to radiation fields as part of their roles.
- Develop, implement, and improve radiation safety procedures and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory and Company requirements.
- Investigate and respond to radiation safety incidents, assist in dosimetry reviews, evaluate regulatory reporting criteria, and provide follow up and corrective/preventative action development for program improvements.
