Provides diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound to generate images of patients' internal organs, tissues, and blood flow. Responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment. Evaluates images for diagnostic quality and makes necessary adjustments to capture the best possible images. Collaborates with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information. Ensures patient safety and comfort during procedures by explaining the process, positioning patients correctly, and adjusting equipment as needed.
Familiar with current scan protocols. Maintains compliance with high-level disinfection practices. Assists with minimally invasive procedures as needed. Possesses familiarity with ultrasound contrast indications and administration practices. Provides intraoperative ultrasound as requested.
- Requires 0-3 years of relevant experience.
- Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
- Requires ability to maneuver equipment and improvise positions when the condition of the patient does not permit routine positioning.
- For ACR accredited ultrasound departments:
Requires active status through one of the following—American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS):
Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Abdomen (RDMS(AB)), Obstetrics & Gynecology (RDMS(OB/GYN)), Pediatric Sonography (RDMS(PS)), or Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT(VT));
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT):
Registered Technologist – Sonography (RT(S)) or Vascular Sonography (RT(VS)); or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI):
Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS). If performing breast ultrasound only, must obtain credential through ARDMS: RDMS(BR) or ARRT:
Registered Technologist – Sonography & Breast US (RT(S)(BS)) or Radiography, Mammography & Breast Ultrasound (RT(R)(M)(BS)) within 18 months of hire. - For non-ACR accredited ultrasound departments:
Requires candidates to meet one of the following—(1) actively pursuing ultrasound education and have already passed the ARDMS physics boards, or (2) graduated from an ultrasound education program. Requires certification through one of the methods mentioned above within 12 months of hire. - May be required to meet registry/certification requirements for another modality, if applicable.
