Nucor Business Technology (NBT) is hiring a full-time Senior Data Engineer to help build and evolve the data platform, standards, and roadmap that power secure, scalable, and reliable data pipelines and lakehouse infrastructure. This onsite role is based in Waterloo, IN, United States and is designed for a senior individual contributor who can set direction and raise the bar for engineering execution.

Role

overview

You will expand the team’s Lakehouse pattern by defining layer boundaries, clarifying what belongs where, and establishing how domains relate. Alongside technical leadership, you will ensure monitoring and observability practices help surface issues early, while partnering across IT, Database Administrators, and Nucor business divisions (including NBG) to support secure connectivity, network security, and data access policy.

Responsibilities
  • Build and standardize the Lakehouse pattern
, including layer boundaries, ownership rules, and domain relationships, plus transformation and orchestration standards used by other engineers.
  • Provide technical leadership through mentorship, review of pipeline and transformation designs before implementation, and problem resolution for complex issues.
  • Own the monitoring and observability standard so data and pipeline problems are identified before stakeholders are impacted.
  • Partner with Database Administrators
, IT, and Nucor business divisions (including NBG) on connectivity, network security, and data access policy; represent NBT in enterprise forums and communities of practice while building durable relationships across Nucor divisions.
  • Lead the data platform and engineering tooling roadmap by prioritizing legacy platform migrations, establishing migration and cutover standards, guiding decision-making around migrate/rebuild/retire, and advising BI and application leadership on data platform initiatives.
  • Treat data accuracy, reliability, and platform availability as safety-critical responsibilities by proactively identifying and escalating risks related to data quality, platform stability, and access control.
Required qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, business intelligence architecture, or enterprise data platform roles.
  • 5+ years in a senior-level technical role (for example, senior engineer, architect, or similar) with mentorship, coaching, or technical guidance responsibilities.
  • Experience architecting and operating an enterprise data warehouse or cloud data platform that serves as a source of truth for organizational reporting and analytics (examples listed:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
