Job Description

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports and collaborates with the Unit Manager in the day-to-day operations of their designated unit(s) consistent with NWHMC Nursing Mission, Vision and Values and UW Medicine Patients are First goals. The ANM supports effective and efficient care by focusing on daily staffing and assignments, onboarding new nurses, patient rounding, supporting smooth patient flow and care coordination of complex patients, and unit focus on clinical standards and performance improvement.

The ANM is lead on ensuring effective unit-based onboarding and mentoring of preceptors and unit based staff education coordination in collaboration with the clinical education department and/or Clinical Nurse Specialist assigned to specific patient populations or projects. The ANM routinely relieves staff of patient care duties so that they can complete post discharge patient calls and/or represent the department in committees or projects.

A primary role of the Assistant Nurse Manager is complex care coordination, oversight of clinical nursing care, and mentorship of nursing staff to a higher level of performance.

Primary Job Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Leadership:
Works with the unit leadership to operationalize the unit goals to support excellence in patient care for the population of patients served on the designated unit and in supporting the patient placement guidelines. Ensures effective communication within the unit regarding projects, professional practice expectations, standards for clinical practice, staffing guidelines, new equipment/updated processes, unit goals etc. Assists the Nurse Manager in leading staff meetings.

Collaborates with other nursing units to ensure safe patient handoff, coordination of resources and daily operations. Reviews monthly unit staffing schedule to ensure adherence to approved staffing levels/matrix. Plans for coverage due to vacations, LOAs, and vacant positions. Oversees posting of monthly work schedules and timecard management; assists with timecard approval/sign-off for payroll. Monitors timecard patterns, labor and expense budgets, HPPD reports, and participates in annual budgeting and staffing evaluations.

Collaborates with the Nursing Supervisor in daily resource management and provides unit leadership coverage in the absence of the Nurse Manager.

Clinical Practice:
Maintains clinical skills to provide direct patient care and serves as a clinical role model. Relieves nurses of patient assignments to facilitate attendance and follow-up tasks. Investigates and resolves complex clinical problems; develops plans of care for populations or individual patients. Serves as patient care consultant/resource and supports clinical research and student clinical experiences. Mentors staff in effective delegation and prioritization;

monitors unit acuity and patient flow; coordinates care and patient flow with unit leadership and nursing supervisor. Supports care coordination for complex patients.

Building High Performing Teams:
Supports hiring, onboarding, and preceptor coverage; maintains up-to-date new hire skills checklists; ensures adequate preceptors and onboarding resources. Supervises unit staff to ensure work meets standards; provides performance feedback and input. Coordinates unit-based education and roving in-services; identifies resources for staff growth and development; develops action plans for orientation issues; maintains documentation and participates in new hire evaluations and performance reviews.

Fosters a blame-free culture and a highly engaged workforce; maintains staff safety in daily operations.

Quality:
Participates in evidence-based practice reviews, leads or participates in small groups and committees, reviews PI memos, and develops corrective actions. Conducts audits, uses data to drive improvements, and participates in adverse event reviews. Supports unit and organizational initiatives (e.g., CAUTI, CLABSI,

C. diff, Pressure Ulcers, Fall Reduction, Restraint Reduction, Behavioral management) and assists with regulatory readiness and unit assessments. Collaborates with the Unit Manager on corrective action plans.

Customer Service:
Participates in patient rounding with the Unit Manager, provides feedback and coaching, and uses rounding feedback to drive unit improvements. Reviews Avatar results and comments with the Unit Manager. Supports bedside shift reports and handoffs, and assists with achieving annual patient satisfaction goals.

Continuously expands knowledge, seeks learning opportunities, and tracks industry trends with a focus on clinical care for the designated unit.
