Position: Special Education Resource Teacher (Elementary Teacher)

SUMMARY:

Special education resource teachers work with students who have special needs in their regular classroom or a separate, designated classroom.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Other duties may be assigned.

  • Commit to implement differentiation instruction, including Three Tier Instruction, whole group and flexible small grouping of students
  • Administer frequent assessments to evaluate students’ continuous progress
  • Analyze data; evaluate student work and assessment data to make instructional adjustments, evaluate social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports
  • Analyze classroom literacy strengths and weaknesses to formulate plans for improvement of student achievement in reading
  • Work collaboratively with other alternative education staff
  • Prepare rigorous, engaging lessons and other instructional materials to meet the individual needs of all students
  • Provide direct, explicit comprehension instruction
  • Attend all professional development, including training that may occur during the summer
  • Maintain control that is conducive to classroom and campus safety
  • Hold parent conferences regarding academic achievement and behavioral issues
  • Keep attendance and grade records as required by the school
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities related to monitoring students’ behavior and activities in the classroom, on the campus, and during school events
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Students. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with district policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have working knowledge of state standards, general education curriculum, IEP's, behavioral interventions, and NGSC curriculum framework
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Able to adapt material
EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's Degree required
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Must hold a valid Special Education Teacher License
LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend correspondence, memos, instructions, and documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Ability to speak effectively with staff, students and community.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

OTHER

SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to operate personal computers and related software. Ability to operate a fax machine, copier, modems, telephone, and equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. Ability to interact positively with staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to work independently, to function effectively in a multi-task environment, and to interact positively with the public.

Ability to maintain confidentiality about school and student business. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and community.
