Registered Respiratory Therapist - Sleep Apnea Education Center

The Sleep Apnea Education Center provides personalized breathing devices and treatments to help patients achieve restful sleep.

The IU Sleep Apnea Education Center RT provides comprehensive education, evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. The RT participates in clinical patient education, compliance management, and patient follow up. Education and management of sleep disorders require understanding of the multifaceted disease processes that affect both sleep and wakefulness. The RT is credentialed and able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff and interacts with physicians and other health care providers professionally.

What

You’ll Do
  • Competency with Practice Parameters and Clinical Guidelines for sleep health and disorders: patient education and compliance monitoring. Proficient in pathophysiology, epidemiology, and clinical guidelines for sleep disorders and treatment options.
  • Teaching and motivational skills: apply principles of motivational teaching to facilitate patient self-management. Provide patient education for sleep disorders, comorbidities, therapeutic equipment and processes, therapy options, sleep hygiene and self-help. Encourage family/bed partner participation with the treatment plan. Promote community education on general sleep hygiene, sleep disorders and treatment options.
  • Program and business management: verify insurance requirements and patient financial responsibility. Utilize electronic medical records programs. Maintain accurate, pertinent, accessible, confidential and secure patient records in accordance with privacy and security standards. Ensure documentation of all patient interactions. Participate in professional development activities.
  • Evaluation/management of patient education and compliance: monitor adherence to prescribed treatment. Collect, analyze and integrate patient information. Implement and follow-up on physician orders. Communicate effectively with the patient’s healthcare team regarding new or continued symptoms or treatment concerns. Develop programs and provide education to assist patients with treatment compliance, including tracking health improvement indicators. Educate on equipment/supply replacement schedules and PAP acclimation, usage, troubleshooting, pressure relief options, cleaning and safety education.
  • Service management and essential skills: maintain proficiency in sleep medicine and technology, comply with professional standards and applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards related to safety and infection control. Meet all industry registry, certification and state licensure requirements. Maintain CPR/BLS certification. Demonstrate strong medical terminology, sleep disorder pathophysiology knowledge, patient assessment techniques, and age-appropriate education and communication. Demonstrate cultural competency, customer service, health literacy, critical thinking, and teamwork.

    Develop and implement policies to protect patient information and comply with privacy and security of data. Adhere to sleep center policies related to quality assurance, clinical procedures, emergency preparedness and safety. Demonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position.
What You’ll Need
  • Current license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner from the state of Indiana.
  • Graduation from a CoARC-accredited respiratory care program.
  • National Board for Respiratory Care (N.B.R.C.) registry exam must be passed within 6 months of hire date. The 6-month requirement for the RRT is void if hire date is more than one year past graduation date.
  • Healthcare Provider Certification. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department policies.
  • Preferred ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP certification.
  • Strong customer service skills and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential patient information and basic computer skills with EMR.
