Responsibilities- Oversee the daily workflow of the Blood Bank, including pre-transfusion testing, antibody identification, cross matching, and blood product preparation.
- Ensure all testing and processes comply with hospital policies, AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and other applicable regulatory standards.
- Provide technical guidance and problem resolution for complex serological cases and transfusion reactions.
- Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure staff compliance.
- Supervise and schedule Blood Bank personnel; assist with hiring, training, performance evaluations, and competency assessments.
- Monitor and document quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and the transfusion committee to ensure appropriate blood product usage and patient safety.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of blood components and supplies; coordinate with the blood supplier to meet patient needs.
- Participate in inspection readiness and serve as a point of contact for external assessors.
- Review and validate instrument maintenance, reagent lot changes, and new method validations.
- Prepare monthly statistics, utilization reports, and quality metrics.
- Serve as a liaison for emergency blood management protocols including massive transfusion protocols (MTPs) and trauma transfusion support.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related field required. - Experience:
3–5 years of clinical laboratory experience, with strong technical knowledge in the assigned section preferred. - Licensure/Certification:
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by ASCP required. - Certification renewal:
Technologists certified after January 1, 2004 must renew certification every 3 years by participating in a certification maintenance program. - Advanced certification:
Advanced certification in a laboratory specialty must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
