Position Summary
Performs assigned projects, procedures, or tasks at a level of independent expertise, involving the installation, calibration, testing, inspection, repair and maintenance of all types and kinds of non‑revenue power quality instruments, distribution recloser controls, distribution substation transformer and distribution substation capacitor bank protective relaying equipment and systems. Also performs distribution recloser control programming, testing, and installation on downline member systems upon request.
Directs the activities of assigned Distribution Relay Apprentices to maintain effective and reliable protective relay systems on the Distribution Substation system.
- Assures safe work practices are recognized and implemented on the job.
- Works with Distribution Working Foreman to coordinate project and maintenance work.
- Performs maintenance testing on distribution substation system equipment.
- Monitors work in progress and provides feedback to maintain schedules.
- Performs operational tests for verifying proper operation of distribution substation protective relaying systems and solid‑state controls.
- Reviews specifications of newly acquired equipment, performs operational check‑outs and verifications, and recommends regarding equipment acceptability.
- Assists in SCADA checkout with the Communications Department.
- Maintains supporting software specific to distribution substation, capacitor bank, and meter point relaying and controls equipment (e.g., SEL Accelerator Quickset, Cooper Pro View, Doble Protection Suite, Apsen
DB Relay Database). - Performs or coordinates equipment calibrations on Fluke meters, Doble test sets, etc.
- Makes sketches, takes notes, draws graphs, completes reports, and supplies raw data to maintain accurate records of installation, testing, repair, and maintenance; reports any abnormal or potentially dangerous conditions promptly.
- Maintains familiarity with and makes approved field corrections to blueprints of distribution substation relaying and control systems to verify proper installation; incorporates changes into departmental files and keeps them up to date.
- Performs all assigned projects within Hoosier Energy’s general switching instructions and equipment clearance procedures; performs switching procedures when directed.
- Responsible for proper utilization, maintenance, and security of assigned tools, test equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
- Provides training and instruction assistance for the Distribution Relay Technician HEATS Apprenticeship program as needed.
- Reviews with and provides input to the Distribution Substation Relay Working Foreman or the Area Coordinator, Meter Relay, to recommend practices, procedures, system requirements or improvements that facilitate maintenance schedules, short‑ or long‑range plans, and efficiencies or cost improvements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Successful completion of the HEATS Distribution Relay Program minimum.
- Other levels of experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 4 years of electrical utility experience in relay technician or related field.
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with varying scopes and timelines.
- Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels and work as part of a team.
- Professionalism, positive attitude, and teamwork.
- Valid Indiana driver's license.
