Overview
The Head Lifeguard is responsible for routine daily operational tasks related to aquatic operations at the assigned park location under the supervision and direction of the pool or park manager. The position includes all facets of recreational programming, aquatic operations, frontline customer service, and service delivery. Independent judgment is utilized when policies and procedures are not available, and the incumbent must exercise good judgment in aquatic safety and facility operations, making quick, concise, and correct decisions that may affect the health, safety, and well-being of pool patrons and staff.

Position Responsibilities- Provides overall supervision of programs, services, facilities, and personnel at the aquatic facility.
- Assumes responsibility for facility operations in the absence of the Pool Manager.
- Maintains the aquatic facility, ensuring the highest attention to safety for participants and employees.
- Maintains the minimum number of staff in-service hours required by the department and meets minimum standards for both independent and internal performance and risk management audits.
- Collects admission fee and revenue, prepares daily cash reports, and is fiscally accountable for admissions and cash balancing.
- Provides and coordinates proper on‑deck supervision of staff, appropriate levels of lifeguard coverage, lifeguard attentiveness, proper lifeguard rotations, facility inspections, and closing the facility or attractions when required by health and safety guidelines.
- Cleans and restocks restroom facilities.
- Maintains detailed record keeping for facility inspections.
- Assists supervisor who recruits, hires, trains, evaluates, disciplines, and advises on‑site personnel and volunteers.
- Maintains ongoing lifeguard and staff in‑service training.
- Assists supervisor who implements and evaluates aquatic programs and services at the location.
- Supervises the training and monitoring of adherence to departmental policy and procedure at the aquatic location.
- Responsible for opening, closing, and securing the facility, answering phones, and communicating with the public.
- Maintains a clean facility, grounds, deck, filter, and chemical room.
- Scans assigned zone of protection, enforces rules, and ensures proper rotation.
- Provides safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions, and first aid when necessary.
- Monitors participants and users of the facility with a high priority on safety and exemplary customer service.
- Follows all established protocol for biohazard materials and aquatic facility rules, protecting self from sun exposure.
- Reports immediately any hazardous conditions to supervisor, including inability to properly scan zone due to weather or other conditions.
- Teaches, coaches, and/or assists with lessons, swim team, other programs, and special events at the location.
- Adheres to department policy and procedure at the aquatic location and maintains confidentiality at all times.
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior relevant experience in aquatic operations.
- Thorough knowledge of pool and water chemistry and operations, including water testing and chemical applications, chemical controller calibration, set points and operation, chemical pump operation, back washing of pool filters, cleaning strainer baskets, slide and play feature motor operation, pool heater operation, pool vacuuming, and chemical and supply ordering.
- Licenses/Certifications required or ability to obtain:
Lifeguard License, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, CPR and First Aid Teaching Certificate, Aquatic Facility Operator or Certified Pool Operator certification. - Respiratory physical and fit test for chemical facemask, maintenance, and chemical handling procedures training required.
- Job knowledge and experience in aquatic operations, experience in training and supervising employees, ability to coordinate multiple tasks, effective communication, customer service orientation, and adherence to established procedures, policies, and protocol.
- High school diploma and/or GED equivalent preferred.
Head Lifeguards are assigned to an aquatic facility as a primary work location in a standard aquatic facility environment, primarily outdoors. The position involves exposure to pool chemicals and cleaning supplies. Work hours include holidays, weekends, and evenings. The incumbent will be expected to travel to various locations for training, meetings, and related activities.
Physical Conditions- Sitting at a desk the majority of the day.
