How You’ll Make An ImpactA Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for the duties related to the fluent operations of the swim lesson program. This includes the organizational skills and aid in the promotion of the YMCA swim lesson program, understanding of the YMCA mission, and an understanding and ability to teach others of the YMCA character values.
- Attend CPR/AED and First Aid classes taught at the YMCA quarterly (or complete at an authorized provider). The Y will pay for your class fee but not for your time at the training.
- Create and be flexible in daily lesson plans.
- Organize and efficiently use all allotted time for swim lessons (30 to 45 minutes); play time should only be used in the last 5 minutes of class and directly relate to skills taught.
- Use the provided time for proper preparation for all swim lessons to provide the utmost in YMCA swim lessons.
- Communicate well with children and make each child feel comfortable in an aquatic environment.
- Communicate well with parents, keep them informed of progress and upcoming registrations, and advise them on proper level selection before the last week of class.
- Open and close classes on time, and ensure safety and discipline throughout.
- Maintain accurate and current records; submit all paperwork to the Aquatics Director on time.
- Cooperate with lifeguards to manage free swim participants and uphold pool rules.
- Use proper discipline techniques to maintain a safe and productive learning environment.
- Encourage enthusiasm and help families register for future sessions.
- Complete onboarding checklist and assigned online courses.
- At least 14 years of age.
- Experience working with children is required; a strong swimming background is preferred.
- Child CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications required. If not held at the time of hire, must be obtained within the first 3 months of employment.
- Good organizational, leadership, and communication skills, and a good understanding of the YMCA Swim Lesson program.
