American Sign Language Facilitator (For a Student)/DHH Interpreter

An American Sign Language (ASL) Facilitator is an individual who assists in the delivery of core content, ongoing classroom communication, and general coursework for a student who is Deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). The ASL Facilitator must have a passion for working with students who are DHH. The ASL Facilitator must be willing to take directives from the classroom teacher, DHH teacher, and/or building administrator.

The ASL Facilitator will be asked to engage in a wide variety of events during the day-to-day workings of the school ranging from but not limited to re-teaching/reinforcing core classroom concepts taught by the General Education teacher, assisting the DHH student in accessing the curriculum, collaborating with and bridging communication between the licensed teacher for DHH and the General Education teacher, communicating with the DHH student and bridging communication between his/her peers and teacher(s), and providing necessary supports to ensure the DHH student is engaged and on track to complete the grade-level core content.

Essential

Functions
  • Follow lesson plans provided by the General Education teacher to facilitate the learning of a concept, skill, or lesson.
  • Follow along with the General Education teacher as they work through the assigned curriculum for the student's grade/ability level.
  • Ability to actively engage students in lessons and discussions.
  • Provide individualized behavioral and/or academic support to students as needed.
  • Monitor and collect individualized data on student progress per the direct oversight of the teacher for DHH.
  • Ensure that students have access to the appropriate resources.
  • Check to ensure students have the appropriate materials to complete an assignment.
  • Maintain student confidentiality for all students enrolled in the school.
  • Provide support / ongoing communication between the DHH student / General Education teacher(s) / DHH Teacher / building staff.
  • Assist students as needed with activities provided in the curriculum. The curriculum may be enhanced with other activities and/or lessons due to practical needs for the use of ASL and conveying correct concepts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration.
Employment Standards Knowledge Of
  • Work with individual students or a small group of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the curriculum.
  • Assists the General Education teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on their perceived understanding of individual students, their needs and abilities.
  • Help DHH students master instructional materials assigned by the General Education teacher.
  • Working knowledge of the subject taught with sufficient competency to assist students with individual concerns or needs.
  • Be receptive to guidance on job responsibilities.
  • Work in a positive and calming manner with students.
  • Work in a professional manner with all staff and students.
  • Be on time to work and to all assigned duties.
  • Alert the Teacher for DHH to any problem or special information about individual students.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of all individuals working with FTCSC students.
  • Participate in in-service training programs as assigned.
Skills To
  • Fluent understanding of American Sign Language and the needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  • Understand and follow both oral and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Maintain routine records and files.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required position.
