This position is on the AES Indiana Relay/SCADA team, responsible for installing and maintaining protective relay and SCADA systems in IPL’s substations (4kV – 345kV) and power plants. The role supports Relay/SCADA technicians and manages engineering equipment replacement/upgrade projects of limited scope.
Basic Requirements- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an ABET‑accredited college/university.
- Five (5) to eight (8) years of progressively responsible engineering experience.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in Protective Relaying or SCADA systems on electric utility transmission and distribution systems and at power plants.
- Relay setting development experience on both transmission and distribution systems
- Ability to perform relay coordination studies and experience with short‑circuit modeling software (e.g., ASPEN One Liner)
- Experience in substation RTU/SCADA configurations and knowledge of DNP3, Mod Bus and SEL protocols
- Familiarity with SEL and GE relays and associated software
- Electric utility T&D engineering or operations related experience
- Knowledge of NERC reliability standards (PRC and CIP)
- Positive attitude and priority for safe and reliable operations
- Ability to be agile in order to switch between different tasks as field support is needed
- Experience in the design, maintenance and testing of substation equipment
- Ability to participate in after‑hours callouts to provide technical and operational guidance in support of system emergencies
- Strong skills in reading engineering drawings and specifications
- Understanding of various protection schemes for proper checkout techniques
- Strong substation P&C and power equipment troubleshooting skills
- Relevant experience in substation field engineering services and technical support for the construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment up to and including 345kV.
- Professional Engineering License
- Perform relay setting coordination studies
- Develop RTU/SCADA configurations
- Evaluate relay performance following system events
- Investigate and resolve protection and control system operation issues
- Create and revise electrical substation control schemes and wiring diagrams
- Provide field engineering services and technical support for the maintenance, construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment up to and including 345kV prior to it being released to transmission operations
- Maintain a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based on developing knowledge of potential hazards, industry regulations/requirements, and company practices
