Job Summary

The Commercial Credit Underwriter (1mm-10mm commitments) is an individual contributor experienced in gathering, analyzing, and interpreting various types of credit information on existing and prospective customers to determine credit worthiness. Under the supervision of Underwriting Team Leaders, this role assists in structuring new requests for extensions of credit, completing renewals, and recommending actions for deteriorating credits while independently managing workflow and communication with field partners.

The Underwriter evaluates credit risk, recommends client credit solutions, and makes loan decisions within an assigned lending authority, ensuring compliance with credit policy and guidelines.

Essential Functions
  • Evaluate loan requests to identify purpose, risk elements, and collateral adequacy.
  • Assess liquidity, quality of management, market position, industry, and overall business climate to estimate future profitability.
  • Analyze credit data, financial statements (cash flow, balance sheet, income statements), and tax returns to determine creditworthiness.
  • Apply accounting principles to financial modeling and interpret risk rating model output.
  • Develop credit recommendation and document findings for loan structuring within delegated authority.
  • Identify deteriorating credits early and provide escalation recommendations for restructuring.
  • Initiate annual credit reviews and ensure loan documents match approved terms.
  • Create and maintain credit files, foundational spreadsheets, and portfolio administration tools.
  • Track client data, document compliance, trends, and dashboards.
  • Mentor, coach, and train Credit Analysts while collaborating with bankers and partners to drive process efficiency.
  • Participate in risk management projects and underwriting process improvement initiatives.
  • Comply with all Key Bank policies and act professionally, ethically, and with integrity.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience in finance, accounting, economics, or business.
Work Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of commercial/specialty client segment underwriting, credit, banking, and/or financial services experience.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and effectively utilize other technology applications.
  • Understanding of financial models.
  • Ability to gather relevant research, analyze data, and synthesize large amounts of information to accurately assess commercial creditworthiness.
  • Demonstrated understanding of commercial credit underwriting/approval methodologies, credit policies, and procedures.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills with the ability to collaboratively impact results.
  • Ability to plan, multi-task, and manage time effectively with limited supervision.

  • Analyze financial statements, assess financial health, and apply risk metrics.
  • Identify, assess, and control potential lending risks, including interpreting credit agreements.
  • Initiate timely, prioritized actions to meet deadlines and maximize productivity.
  • Communicate complex information concisely and persuasively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Collaborate effectively and take ownership of actions and performance.
  • Make evidence‑based decisions, evaluate impacts, and choose best paths in lending scenarios.

Compensation And Benefits

This position is eligible to earn a base salary in the range of $61,000.00 – $94,000.00 annually. Placement within the pay range may differ based upon various factors, including but not limited to skills, experience and geographic location. Compensation for this role also includes eligibility for incentive compensation subject to individual and company performance.
