Post Doctoral Fellowship:
Global Patient Safety

Eli Lilly and Company – Join our Research and Development team in Indianapolis, Indiana. We bring life‑changing medicines to people around the world and are looking for a driven post‑doctoral scientist to help advance machine learning (ML)–based risk factor modeling for patient safety.

Purpose of the Job

In this role you will utilize innovative ML and rare‑event modeling techniques to investigate risk factors and protective factors associated with serious or severe drug adverse events. The initial focus will be on neuroscience and will be extended to other therapeutic areas. Your work will inform the Global Patient Safety (GPS) Medical organization and support benefit‑risk assessment, risk‑minimization, and safety surveillance.

Key

Objectives
  • ML‑Based Risk Factor Modeling – develop and validate ML models to predict safety outcomes using patient histories, medications, imaging, and other clinical parameters. Employ ensemble methods, resampling strategies, cost‑sensitive learning, and anomaly detection to address rare‑event prediction.
  • External Scientific Communication – present findings at conferences and publish in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Safety Surveillance Improvement – assess current surveillance processes and recommend integration of new methodologies into existing platforms to enhance consistency and accuracy of data review.
  • Internal and External Collaboration – work closely with cross‑functional teams (Medical, Statistics, Toxicology, Advanced Intelligence) and external partners to share methodologies and insights.
  • Global Patient Safety Support – provide subject‑matter expertise on regulatory requirements, support audit readiness, and develop safety quality system documents.
Basic Qualifications
  • Advanced analytical, statistical, bioinformatics, or medical‑related graduate degree (Ph.D., Pharm.

    D. or equivalent).
Additional Skills
  • Competency in independent analysis of data and interpretation of clinical study results.
  • Excellent computer skills and interdisciplinary experience in statistical modeling and computer science, including ML.
  • Proficiency in Python and R with key ML libraries (scikit-learn, XGBoost, Tensor Flow).
  • Self‑directed, highly motivated, and eager to pursue research and publication goals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation experience, and strong publication record.
  • Experience in data analysis and reporting. Experience in drug safety is not required.

Location:

Indianapolis, Indiana (office‑based). Remote work is not considered.

Employment type:

Fixed‑duration post‑doctoral fellowship (2 years, with potential extension to 3 years). Candidates may later be offered full‑time positions.

Benefits and Compensation

Salary range: $58,000 – $123,200. Full‑time employees are eligible for a company bonus (based on company and individual performance).
