Job Overview

The Pathologist Assistant – Exempt position is intended for individuals currently certified as a pathologist assistant. The individual will be capable of performing all routine functions in the surgical pathology area, including some escalated issues and troubleshooting quality issues. Responsibilities include conducting gross examinations of surgical pathology specimens under appropriate supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the department manager/supervisor with day‑to‑day operations of the surgical pathology area.
  • Help ensure accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the grossing staff.
  • Perform gross examination and dissection of large, complex/complicated specimens in preparation for histologic processing.
  • Provide technical instructions, training, and guidance to pathologist assistants, grossing technicians, students, and lab assistants.
  • Assist with orientation, training, and training verification of newly hired grossing staff.
  • Perform New Hire QC and competency assessment for grossing staff.
  • Provide input for employee performance reviews.
  • Assist with establishing the level of supervision for each specimen type.
  • Perform specimen preparation on non‑gynecological specimens, including cytopreparation, staining, cover slipping, etc., after completing training on these types.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards.
  • Ensure compliance with local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Perform troubleshooting and exercise independent judgment when necessary.
  • Interact directly with pathologists regarding gross dissection/description activities.
  • Identify and correct problems that may affect test performance or result reporting.
  • Coordinate and monitor workflow; act as a key contact for staff to identify problem areas and recommend changes.
  • Monitor HPAP as needed and participate in development/monitoring of quality indicators for the QMP.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for job‑related responsibilities.
  • Comply with Quest Diagnostics corporate continuing education requirements and state licensure/CMP requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
