Overview

The Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive EHS strategies and programs that promote a strong safety culture, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship across the organization. This position will lead initiatives to minimize risks to people, property, and the environment while partnering closely with internal stakeholders and external vendors, including the Workers’ Compensation provider, to manage workplace safety and incident response.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership
    • Develop and implement a company-wide EHS strategy aligned with business goals and compliance obligations.
    • Champion a proactive safety culture through leadership engagement, communications, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
    • Monitor legislation and regulatory changes; advise senior leaders on implications and mitigation strategies.
    • Lead site audits and regulatory inspections, ensuring corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner.
    • Oversee workplace incident investigations, root cause analysis, and the development of corrective and preventive actions.
    • Partner with the company’s Workers’ Compensation vendor to manage and monitor all workplace injury cases.
    • Ensure timely reporting and documentation of workers’ compensation claims in accordance with state and federal laws.
    • Collaborate with HR and site leaders on return-to-work programs and injury case resolution strategies.
  • Risk Management & Safety Programs
    • Lead the creation and enforcement of policies and procedures to minimize occupational hazards.
    • Develop and track KPIs; regularly report trends and insights to leadership.
    • Identify high-risk areas and implement mitigation strategies to reduce workplace injuries and incidents.
  • Training and Development
    • Design and deliver EHS training programs, including onboarding, compliance, job-specific safety protocols, and emergency procedures.
    • Ensure consistent EHS training across all locations with tracking mechanisms for compliance.
  • Environmental Sustainability
    • Oversee environmental compliance and initiatives, including waste management, water conservation, air quality, and hazardous material handling.
    • Support development and reporting of sustainability goals.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain emergency response plans and business continuity strategies.
    • Coordinate site-specific drills and training to ensure preparedness across locations.
  • Team Leadership and Cross-Functional Partnership
    • Lead and develop a high-performing EHS team.
    • Partner with Operations, HR, Facilities, Legal, and other departments to ensure EHS initiatives are integrated into business operations.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in EHS roles, including 5+ years in a senior or multi-site leadership position.
  • Experience managing workers’ compensation claims in collaboration with third-party administrators or vendors.
  • Strong background in regulatory compliance within manufacturing, industrial, or logistics environments.

Certifications (preferred):

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional)
  • CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager)

Skills:

  • Deep knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and state regulatory standards.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and drive accountability.
  • Proficient in EHS data analytics, reporting tools, and risk assessment methodologies.
Work Environment and Travel
  • Primarily office-based with frequent travel to operational sites (up to 30%) as needed to support audits, investigations, and training.
