SummaryThe Director of Claims directs activities within General and Auto Liability Claims, Physical Damage Repairs, and Property and Cargo Claims. The role includes managing loss control activities, third‑party provider relationships, and overseeing a staff of approximately 40 professionals, including Claims Managers, Supervisors, Senior Office Manager, Claims Analysts, and clerical support. The Director reports to the Senior Director of Claims and operates with minimal supervision while serving as a subject matter expert across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
EssentialFunctions
- Provides strategic direction to the claims team to establish goals, improve processes, create an inclusive work environment, and motivate staff to increase claim quality, reduce costs, and improve employee and customer satisfaction.
- Ensures consistent identification of exposures, recommends solutions, promotes loss prevention, and manages documented safety/risk management programs.
- Develops and implements processes to ensure physical damage repairs are completed timely and properly in partnership with vendors, operations, and all business units.
- Collaborates with Operations, Sales, Central Support, and Safety on liability, property, cargo, and physical damage repair matters.
- Maintains appropriate coverage to avoid major exposure while controlling costs.
- Manages the claims process to support accurate invoicing and reduce credits, thereby improving customer satisfaction.
- Leads continuous improvement initiatives, including the Process Integrity Program.
- Interacts with field and senior management, internal legal counsel, safety directors, Sales, Ryder Security, and corporate risk management to keep senior leadership informed of claims issues.
- Serves as primary backup for the Senior Director, assisting with all aspects of operations.
- Leads and directs claims managers, office manager, supervisors, and a team of 40+ claims analysts and administrative staff, focusing on continuous development, training, and individual development plans.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Provides direction on high‑exposure claims and business processes.
- Routinely updates senior management on trends and compliance issues to support timely, well‑informed decisions; identifies root causes of claim frequency and severity.
- Builds positive relationships with operations, sales, central support, leadership, and customers to ensure superior service and support renewal business.
- Leads and directs special projects and performs additional assigned duties.
- Proven ability to manage and develop a sizeable staff.
- Fosters collaborative relationships and increases customer satisfaction.
- Demonstrates strong strategic negotiation skills.
- Communicates clearly in verbal and written interactions.
- Effectively influences executive, field management, and other business units.
- Creates a collaborative environment that drives engagement and results.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, finance, or related field (or equivalent claims experience).
- 10+ years in the casualty claim field.
- 5+ years in vehicle rental/leasing or commercial trucking insurance (preferred).
- 5+ years of management or administrative experience.
- Working knowledge of state ownership and joint and several liability laws.
- Strong understanding of insurance law, policy language, and contract interpretation.
- Strong knowledge of Total Quality Management principles.
- Adjuster license or related coursework (e.g., I.I.A. or C.P.C.U) preferred.
Risk Management
Compensation InformationSalary: $150,000 – $200,000 (salaried). Eligible for annual bonus, commission, and/or long‑term incentive plan based on level and type. Compensation ranges may be influenced by experience, education, location, and market data.
