Job Summary

Fleet Services is hiring a Shop Diesel Technician II to support future growth. The role involves performing licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and mechanical/hydraulic/electrical diagnostics. The technician will work under the supervision of a senior technician to learn advanced diagnostics and repair techniques while meeting performance metrics.

Duties
  • Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Assist in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on-the-job experience to perform the job; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information related to the job.
  • Work with the Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations.
  • Manage concurrent assigned tasks, making effective judgments regarding prioritizing work activities and time allocations.
  • Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical and professional standards.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM), DOT Inspections, and follow-up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Occasionally travel and perform work at customer locations.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document per company standards and upload pictures of work performed, parts used, and all findings observed on Repair Orders (RO) using company‑issued devices and/or the Karmak application.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to the standard repair times.
  • Communicate with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings.
  • Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, and environmental policies and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
  • Participate in and complete all company‑required safety training.
  • Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks, and perform daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various truck equipment, including but not limited to electrical, brake, cooling, starting/alternating, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, differential systems, and more.
  • Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair various types of truck equipment across multiple systems.
  • Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to evaluate alternatives.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assist Shop Diesel Technician I with diagnostics.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED plus 3 years of experience in a related field. Other educational or experiential combinations (e.g., a degree in a related discipline or 5 years of experience) are acceptable.
  • Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform job duties.
  • Participate in and complete all company‑required training.
  • Pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment. A valid DOT medical card with at least four months remaining may be substituted for a DOT physical.
  • Be at least 21 years old due to interstate operating authority regulations.
