Job SummaryThe Medication Assistant (MA) serves as a caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. Scope of duties includes:
- Providing age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of residents as per the plan of care.
- Assisting with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital sign collection, and psychosocial support.
- Assisting with transfers, repositioning, walking, and using correct transfer techniques and equipment.
- Completing tasks related to food preparation, dining, and providing water or supplements as needed.
- Administering prescribed medications within state regulations and documenting outcomes.
- Collecting body fluid specimens and gathering vital signs.
- Providing housekeeping, laundry services, and encouraging participation in wellness and recreational programs.
- Participating in departmental committees and task forces as needed.
- High‑school graduate or GED preferred; not required.
- Minimum age of 18 preferred; prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Completion of yearly competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits (minimum 12 hours annually).
- State‑specific certifications:
- Iowa:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and completion of a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. - Minnesota:
Nursing assistant certification, 75‑hour training, registered with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, and Trained Medication Assistant course. - North Dakota:
Certified Nursing Assistant and state‑approved Medication Aide/Assistant course; additional Medication Assistant qualifications for Assisted Living, Basic Care, or Skilled Nursing as applicable. - South Dakota:
Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course completion. - Other Good Samaritan/Sanford facilities:
State required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA) and active nursing assistant registration.
- Iowa:
- Valid driver’s license and auto insurance may be required when applicable.
